Guide: How do I choose a non-clogging toilet?

Waste Removal Ratings: Choose a toilet that has the highest waste removal rating. The recommended Map score should be a minimum of 1,000 grams.

Powerful Flush: We recommend a pressure-assisted, cyclone, or tornado flushing system over a traditional gravity flush.

High water efficiency: Ensure the toilet uses less water, but it won’t affect the flushing power. The water consumption rate must be between 1.28 and 1.6 GPF.

Large Trapway: Some toilets offer a 3- to 4-inch-wide trapway that easily removes huge amounts of waste in a single flush. But a minimum of 2.5 inches of trapway is recommended.

Plumbing System: Sometimes, the toilet gets blocked because of the wrong plumbing structure. So always hire an expert plumber while setting the pipes.

Rough-in Size: Experts recommend a 12-inch rough-in to stay safe from a clog or leak.

Large Flush Valve: Is your toilet flushing poorly? The toilet must have a large flush valve to make the flush more powerful.

Why does a toilet get clogged?

    -Using Too Much Toilet Paper
    -Small Flush Valve
    -Faulty toilet flapper
    -Mineral Buildup
    -Toilet Trap Blocked
    -Pipe Problems
    -Small trapway
-Fault in the Plumbing and Draining system
    -Venting system blocked
    -Using older models
    -Accidentally flush objects
    -Overflow septic system
    -The sewer line is clogged.

    FAQ

Question: What is a dual flush system?
Answer: Since the introduction of water conservation in the country, many toilets have been required to use the least amount of water possible, with the most gpf being 1.6. The dual flush system plays a major role in conserving water, as most of dual flush toilets use an average of 1.28 gpf. There is a partial flush for liquid wastes and a full flush for solid wastes.

Question: What causes my toilet to run?
Answer: One of the main causes of a running toilet is a bad refill valve. A bad design of the refill valve can cause a phantom flush which indicates that your toilet is leaking and the flapper has to be changed in order for it to stop.

Question: What is the difference between one-piece and two-piece?
Answer: Toilets come in two forms – one-piece toilets and two-piece toilets. One-piece toilets provide an integrated tank and bowl, thus getting rid of the crevice between the tank and bowl that usually get dirty. Two-piece toilets have a tank and bowl separated, and they are usually easy to install. One-piece toilets are more costly than two-piece toilets, while two-piece toilets are hard to clean.

Hi, this is Robert Crossan, the owner of this website, has 17 years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of toilets and plumbing systems. After completing the Level 2 Basic Plumbing course in 2005, I started working in both domestic and commercial buildings as a professional plumber. So I can figure out the core difference between different toilet models and brands. It also helped me monitor their work performance and setbacks.

    1. Please list the height of each type of toilet: I need a Universal height, E-max, elongated seat, 1.28 GPF, single flush, white, and 12″ rought-in Toto toilet.

    2. Thanks for the great info – very helpful! Thanks to your article on best toilets, as suggested, I was able to find the MaP Flush Score for the models I’m considering and feel very confident in my decision!

    3. I have two Toto Drake toilets in my home. They are very nice quality, my take on them.
The Sanagloss coating wears off after about 6 months ands crap starts sticking to the bowls. I followed the Toto’s recommendations and only use soap and water to clean, no chemicals.
They are not as unblockable as Toto claims, I have two 14yo boys that have been blocking up these bowls constantly since I installed them several years ago.
They are also quite loud when flushing.
Again, they are nice quality, built very well, but for the premium price they sell for I expected them to handle my kids dumps better.

    4. I’ve been looking for this kind of info for a while now. I bought what I thought was a high end American Standard toilet because my turds are HUGE, but it’s worse than the cheap toilet I paid less than $120 for. I was getting ready to design a garbage disposal type toilet that would mince my turds on contact, glad I didn’t have to.
