Each of those flushing toilets has some advantages and some disadvantages. If you don’t want to regret your toilet purchase, then Check my recommendation and select from that list.

Whether it is for a short call or a long call, we have to visit the toilet multiple times. So, having a powerful and easy flush is mandatory. You don’t want to buy a toilet that bubbles waste after flushing it several times. With so many flushing toilets on the market, I have decided to review only the top-rated, most powerful flushing toilets after considering a number of factors.

Flushing toilet parts introduction

Cautions! Don’t make a mistake!

State approval

Some of the best-selling toilet models are restricted for installation in some states like California, Colorado, Texas, and Washington because of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WaterSense standard. The states only allow WaterSense-labeled toilets that use 20% less water to protect our environment. Toilets that utilize up to 1.28 GPF meet the criteria of the WaterSense standard. So if you live in one of those states and plan to buy a 1.6 GPF toilet, it will be a total waste of money.

Same models in different variants

What if you order a one-piece toilet but get a two-piece toilet even though the model is the same? Yes, some brands have the same model name with multiple variants, like one-piece, two-piece, or wall-hung units.

Missing hardware

Some toilets are sold without mounting hardware and toilet seats. So you need to spend additional dollars to buy them separately and complete the installation. So check what accessories they offer before buying.

A Brief History of the Flush Toilet: How Did It Change the World?

The invention of the toilet is one of the most remarkable things that has been invented in the history of civilization. Among a wide variety of toilets, flush toilets are mostly used all over the world. In primitive latrines, people used a stream of water to remove waste. We are talking about ancient civilizations that existed at least 5,000 years ago. If we search history, we will see that toilets were used in early civilizations like the Mohenjo-Dara and Harappa.

Sir John Harington invented the first modern flushable toilet at the beginning of 1596. In his description, we can see a 2-foot-deep oval bowl with a resin and wax pitch. There is an upstairs cistern that makes no mistake in evaluating all of Harington’s pot devaluation. This model uses 7.5 gallons of water per flush, which is too much waste in terms of water usage.

After that, in 1775, an Englishman, Alexander Cumming, got the very first patent for a flush toilet. He was able to make the S-shaped pipe beneath the toilet bowl, which we now use as the most trusted term for a toilet trap. This removed odors and gases from the sewers, which is how we got an extremely neater bathroom experience. After that, several parts were invented by many more people, like the ballcock, and a scientist named Crapper invented the toilet fill valve.

Different flushing systems

A toilet can be considered great or not great, depending on its flushing system. A great toilet should have a good and effective flushing system. It should also be able to clear any visible dust and waste in just one flush. But don’t flush everything, like disposable diapers, napkins, pads, solvents, facial tissues, etc., because those items are not flushable. Here are 9 different types of flushing systems:

Gravity Flush Systems (Most Common)

It is one of the traditional types of flushing systems used in most toilets. Gravity-assisted toilets work on the basis of gravity. After pushing the handle, you will see a valve opening within the tank. When water is inserted inside the bowl, a strong siphoning effect initiates. This siphoning action pulls all the waste into the trapway.

After a while, that waste goes into the sewer pipes. There is a small gushing pipe for gravity-induced waste, and the mechanism also prevents overflow in the tank. The gravity flush system is well-suited for the old models, and as it comes at a cheap rate, it may be a great option for the low-cost washroom.

Dual Flush System (Water-Saving)

This contemporary flush system is mainly known for the water-saving module. The dual flush system complements modern flushing systems. The most interesting part of this toilet is that users can decide whether a full or partial flush needs to be pressed.

There are mainly two modes available for washing the waste. Between the two buttons, the small button is used for cleaning the liquid waste, so it consumes less water (not more than 0.8 gallons per flush). The full flush is used to thrash away all the solid waste. There are also power jets with dual flush systems, which is a self-cleaning method.

A dual flush system is best for families that need to cut off excessive use of water. As this model can save a huge amount of water, it can also save the owner’s water and electricity bills.

Pressure-Assisted Flushing System (Most Powerful)

Pressure-assisted toilets are also like the gravity model, but the additional mechanical pressure is different. A tiny tank within the main tank accelerates the extra force. This sealed cylindrical tank always works like an enforcer. It always makes a loud whooshing sound crafted by the air force inside the cylinder. You will be surprised to hear that it generates a water pressure of about 25 PSI.

The flushing mechanism is well-suited for public toilets.

Single-Flush System (Regular Toilet)

Single-flush toilets have been one of the most basic types of flushing mechanisms over the years until the dual flushing system arrived. Here, a single flush is enough to remove both liquid and solid waste. A single-flush toilet has a decent combination of gravity and a water pressure system. The flapper in the tank goes up when you push the flush button, and a single flush is enough to push the waste into the sewer line.

Single-flush toilets are best suited for high-traffic public places. These toilets are simple to maintain and more affordable to buy.

Double Cyclone Flush System

The double cyclone flush system has been a great asset for a family that wants less water consumption per flush. You need to keep in mind that this one is not as water-efficient as dual-flush toilets. Some of the toilet brands show that this one is eco-friendly. But the thing is that it consumes a hasty amount of water. You can still bet on this, as this one gives you the guarantee of having a fresh and clog-free bathroom.

Tornado Flush System

Tornado flushing is a must-have feature in modern toilets. The famous brand Toto Toilet has invented the infamous Tornado Flush System. This one is so much more effective for cleaning the rim and bowl. The tornado flush is combined with three powerful jets of water, assisted by a dual-nozzle flush.

A single flush is enough to sweep away all the dirt and waste. It is a quiet and water-efficient mechanism that slashes waste consumption. This also reduces the use of cleaners and chemicals. This one creates a whirlpool effect, creating a day-long freshness in the bathroom. But you have to spend more to get this system.

Siphon Flush System

All of the flushing systems have one core mechanism, just like the Siphon Flush System, which works with the flush valve, which resides inside the internal plunger. As soon as you press the handle, it draws up the water. A folding diaphragm washer sinks through the main outlet. The cistern is a huge point of gravity. The system works like it is drawing out all the water inside the tank. This one is perfect for serving in public toilets.

Double Vortex Flush System

The double vortex flush is a tremendous feature for home toilets. It comes with a great rimless flushing system. This design is really a blessing for the entire bowl interior. It prevents dirt and other kinds of deposits from getting into the toilet. The awesome rimless design adds a new dimension to the bathroom’s ambiance. It is almost impossible to accumulate specks of dirt in the bowl. The top of the bowl remains clean as well.

People who are optimistic about the premium bathroom ambiance can install it in their home washrooms.

Tower Flush System

Tower-style flushing relies heavily on robust flush valves, which are occupied with a rubber gasket. A flapper is responsible for doing all the hard work, including initiating the strong flush capable of washing away all the skid marks. The main working mechanism lies within the canister and tower, responsible for whirling and robust flushing. This system is perfect for heavy-use areas where the water supply is scarce.

What to consider when choosing the best flushing toilet?

Like any other product, a flushing toilet has features worth considering. A toilet with bad features will lead to a bad experience, while a toilet with exceptional features will make using it fun and easy. So, we have discussed below some of the essential features that every best flushing toilet should have. These features should guide you on the type of toilets to purchase.

  • Material of construction

A good number of flushing toilets are built using porcelain or ceramic. Additionally, there are other materials, but they are not as durable as these two. Porcelain and ceramic are very durable and long-lasting. That’s why it’s crucial to look at the material the toilet is made of before buying one. Always consider buying from well-known and reliable brands. Some brands build their toilets using fake or duplicate materials, which end up spoiling quickly. So, you better be willing to spend and get good flushing toilets from the best brands. Here are 6 different types of toilet materials:

Vitreous China: Most common in modern toilets. The core material is porcelain or ceramic, which has an enamel coating.
Porcelain: A smoother surface makes cleaning easier.
Ceramic: Super glossy, but the surface is not as smooth as porcelain.
Metals: Durable but might rust in 2–3 years.
Plastic: Not so durable but lightweight. Portable toilets are made of plastic materials.
Wood: Eco-friendly but difficult to clean.

  • Size

This is another vital factor that people normally overlook. If you have a small bathroom, why should you go for a large toilet? This will only eat up the whole space and make you uncomfortable. Make sure that you measure the available bathroom space and get the ideal toilet for your bathroom. Corner Toilets or Round Toilets could be a good option for a small bathroom. But if you have enough space, you can go for any size flushing toilet. And if you are unsure about the measurements, it’s best to go for the standard-size toilets. But, if you want to buy a portable toilet for RVs, then composting toilet is the best option.

ADA/Comfort Height: 16-18 inches
Standard/Regular Height: 14–15 inches
Convenient Height for Tall/Disabled: 19–22 inches
Kids/Juvenile Height: 10-14 inches

  • Dual flush vs. single flush

The single flush is used in older models, and the dual flush is mainly used in contemporary toilet models.

A single-button mechanism is one that requires the user to press one button or lever for flushing. The average single-flush toilet uses more or less 1.6 gallons per flush. When you flush the toilet, water enters the tank and initiates all the flushing once and for all. A single-flush toilet is so much cheaper than a dual-flush toilet.

On the other hand, the double-flush toilet is equipped with a great pair of buttons on the top of the tank. If you look deeper, you will see that one button is smaller than the other one. The bigger button is for swapping the solid waste, and the smaller one is for the liquid waste. It only uses 1.28 GPF for solid waste. The small flush will consume no more than 0.8 gallons and is termed the half flush.

  • Rim or rimless toilet?

Rimless toilets use a direct and strong flush, often called the tornado flush. This distributes water evenly in the bowl. This generates a more powerful flush compared to the normal flushing model. No hidden corners exist where germs, mold, or airborne waste particles may accumulate. This system seems much clearer than the traditional rimmed toilets. So it is a more hygienic option than rimmed toilets.

Rimmed toilets were popular in the past. When you flush, there is always a chance that water will spill all over the bowl and create a mess. But in this case, it is almost impossible. But the thing is that it gets outdated as the rimless toilet is invented.

So if you tell me which is best for them, I will vote for the rimless toilet, as they come in a wide range of sizes and designs and are so aesthetic that they fit any bathroom ambiance.

  • Design and color

After picking a toilet with the material and size that you want, it’s now time to choose a toilet that will blend well with your bathroom décor. Who wants a dull-looking bathroom? Everything in the bathroom should mix and match. In short, it should be appealing to the eye. Hence, you should search for a toilet that matches your bathroom color. Also, contemporary design is very appealing. Different types of toilet designs include-

  1. One-Piece
  2. Two-Piece
  3. Tankless
  4. Wall-Mounted
  5. Portable, etc.
  • Comfort

Never assume that any toilet design will give you the comfort that you desire. The comfort of the toilet can be determined by looking at the bowl and seat of the toilet. Elongated toilets are more comfortable than Round toilets. Also, you should take a look at the hinges. If possible, a seat on the toilet and see how it feels. A toilet that is good for another person may be bad for you. So, try it out first.

  • Water saving technology

Why not select a toilet that saves water? The toilet uses a lot of water as we go for either a short call or a long call. Today’s toilets come with a water-saving technology that helps to minimize the water used per session. As a result, they reduce the water wastage percentage. For this reason, you should check and know if the toilet you’re buying meets all the modern standards.

Modern toilet water usage: 1.28 GPF (Recommended)
Regular toilet water usage: 1.6 GPF
Old toilet water usage: 3.5 GPF

  • MaP Score

Map Score means a toilet’s maximum flushing performance. It determines how much waste (in grams) can be drained down the drain pipe per flush. If the MaP is 1000 g, you can easily flush golf balls or rubber ducks.

Old toilet MaP score: 300-500 gm
Regular toilet: 600-800 gm
Modern toilet MaP score: 800-1000 gm (highly recommended)

  • Budget

If you want long-lasting, most powerful flushing toilets on the market, you should be ready to spend to get them. A high-quality flushing toilet may last for at least 15 years. Some last for even more than 20 years. So, always get the best instead of going for the low-quality toilets.

Regular toilet price: $200-$550
Bidet Toilet Price: $600-$1800
Smart Toilet Price: $2000-$5000

  • Commercial or residential toilets?

The commercial toilets are made in a flushometer manner. This is implemented in institutions, shopping malls, and public places. So they need to handle huge traffic. Some commercial toilets are linked to a direct mainline water supply line instead of a water tank. Also, installing and maintaining a commercial toilet is quite difficult. So a residential toilet would be the best option if you want a toilet for your home.

  • Different Trapways

Trapways are one of the most crucial aspects of a toilet. It is mainly the channel that has been used to pass the waste to the sewer.

S-traps are meant to be in a normalized section of plumbing fixtures that needs to restrict sewer gas, and also, the emissions of the bad gases are obstructed in this manual. S-shaped pipes are designed in such a way that they need to blindfold all the drain water seals. It holds wastewater before gases pass through the outer channel of the sewage line. When heavy water flow is adjacent to the S-trap, it needs to initiate excessive suction all the way to the holding channel. This dry trap invades an air gap that forms sewer gases.

On the other hand, a P-trap is a system where the water barrier drains in the U section, and the venting pipe avoids siphoning in a waste arm extension disposal maneuver. The suction in the drain makes for large and congested plumbing installations. Thus, the P-traps prevent the bad odor of the sewer in a very technical way.

  • Ideal Toilet Height

The toilet’s height is a crucial thing that needs to be considered when buying a toilet. There are so many types of alternative height models, like the ADA and regular height.

ADA toilets (17–19 inches) are special toilets that are suitable for disabled and elderly people. On the other hand, regular toilets are made for everyone. Their height is 15 to 16 inches from the floor to the main rim of the toilet. Convenient-height toilets are extra tall (up to 23 inches).

FAQ

My toilet is constantly running, what is the problem?

Ans. When your toilet is constantly running, you can fix it by yourself. All you need to find out is whether the flapper is not sitting well in the opening of the flush valve or if the water level in the tank is very high, thus allowing water to flow over the top of the overflow tube and into the tank.

What features should I look for in a top-flushing toilet?

Ans. A toilet is something that you visit on a daily basis or several times a day. So, it needs to be comfortable and very durable. Also, a great toilet should be of an ideal height and have a powerful flushing mechanism to clear all the waste in the bowl. Consider getting a toilet that conserves water and is very easy to clean. You don’t want to be scrubbing the toilet on a daily basis because it can’t clean itself.

Can I install my new flushing toilet without the help of a plumber?

Ans. Yes, you can. Installing a toilet is not very difficult. But this depends on the type of toilet that you are installing. This is very easy if the standard toilet has a 12-inch rough-in. Also, old toilets with a 14-inch or 10-inch rough-in are not challenging. But for the high-end and advanced toilets like wall-hung/mounted, you need to seek the services of a plumber.

Which toilet is the better – a one-piece or two-piece toilet?

Ans. It depends on what you prefer. If you want a toilet that is easy to maintain, then I would suggest the one-piece toilet. If you want a toilet that is easy to set up, you should go for the two-piece toilet. The one-piece toilet is also easy to clean as the bowl and tank are one complete system. You won’t have leakages like in two-piece toilets.

What’s the difference between dual flush and gravity flush systems?

Ans. The flush gravity system is one of the oldest flushing mechanisms on the market. It is very powerful and usually clears waste or contents in the toilet bowl in just one flush. On the other hand, the dual flush system toilet allows the user to save on water as there is a button for a short call and another for a long call. In the end, less water is used, the gravity toilets. In dual flush toilets, sometimes you may have to flush more than once to clear the contents, but this is not usually the case with the gravity flushing system.

What is the most powerful flushing toilet?

Ans. Or Which toilet flushes best? The strongest flushing toilet is one that doesn’t clog and clears waste quickly. It is not possible to determine the power of a flushing system. Each toilet brand has a unique flushing system that works very well to clean all waste without any issues. The powerful flush of a toilet depends on GPF. If you buy a 1.60 GPF toilet, then it will give a stronger flushing power than the 1.28 GPF toilet flush.

How many gallons per flush is best?

Ans. It depends. If you want to save water, then buy 1.28 gallons per flush toilet. It is better for home use. But, if you need a powerful flush system to remove waste more effectively, then buy a 1.6 GPF toilet. The 1.6 GPF is more suitable for overweight people, the elderly, guests, or public use.

  1. I’ve read a number of articles about choosing a toilet, but none of the author’s talks about the “innards.” The old-fashioned ball float rarely had any problems. The stupid plastic mechanism in the Kohler toilets in our house are horrible. Based on your experience, which toilet or brand has the most reliable mechanism?
Thank you for your prompt reply?

    • The most common toilet problems are Weak Flush/Partial flush, Toilet tank won’t fill up or is slow to fill, Toilet running constantly, Toilet is making abnormal noise, Bowl Water Level Drops, etc. According to my client experience(& my experience), Toto user faced less problem than others.
Although, You will not find a perfect toilet, but you can minimize your plumbing cost by selecting a quality toilet. 2. I’m looking for new toilets (3) so cost is important. I’ve looked around and found one I’d like your opinion on if you would. The Toto CST244EF#01 Entrada 1.28 GPF Universal Height toilet elongated. The description does say 1.28 GPF and it notes that it is a quiet flush. Any comments?

  3. Robert I’m looking for a compact elogated toilet for the two guest bathrooms. I’ve decided to go with an Ultramax II for the master but I’m debating between Toto Aquia IV CST446CEMG or KOHLER 3810-0 Santa Rosa. I need the bowl to be easy to maintain with a powerful flush. Is the CEFIONTECT finish on Toto alone worth it? Thank you!

    • For guest bathrooms, Dual flush toilet isn’t the right choice. People will waste lots of water instead of saving. Most of the time, they will use both flushes (0.8gpf & 1.28gpf) to clean the toilet.
In this case, go with Kohler Santa rosa. It’s easy to maintain and has powerful a flushing system comparing to Toto Aquia IV.

  4. Thank you very much Robert! One of the guest bathrooms will be upstairs and used almost exclusively by my son. Is there a compact Toto that you’d recommend over Kohler Santa Rosa? Thank you very much!

  5. Thank you for all your articles. They’re very informative. We’re planning to replace out American Standard toilet and the plumber we’re using suggested Gerber-Viper. I don’t see any reviews here about that particular brand. Any thoughts? Thank you.

  6. I am looking for a touch free flush that only flushes when the seat is closed. Where can I buy one in Edmonton. Alberta?

  7. Hi, i’m suffering from info-overload, so thanks for doing this. Any thoughts about “Signature Hardware 413995 Stalnaker 1.6 GPF Siphonic ADA Compliant Two-Piece Elongated Toilet”?

My criteria are: good flush and reliability (including parts availability for homeowner repair).

    Thanks, again.

  8. Excellent post. My concern as I continue to shop for upgrades is the finding a toilet that prevents peeing outside. As a male, whenever I sit on the toilet, I find myself squeezing my pen** to fit into the toilet so that I do not pee outside. This is certainly a health concern for me. Please, what is your advice ? Your coverage of best toilets did not cover this male issue.

  9. Do you ever think that the government will allow 3gpf toilets back on the market? Or do you think that is long gone now?

  10. Since I have plans on doing a bathroom remodeling, I think it would be best to look into the materials needed so I can set a budget. With that, I’ll try to shop for high efficiency toilets after seeing some good features on it in an advertisement. I shall then consider your tip to put focus on the material and flushing system to get a good deal.

  11. I am looking for a new toilet
we remodeled our bathroom 8 years ago
we use to have the old strong flush toilet that are not sold anymore in the US
Since the new Kohler toilet that has 1.67 flush power was installed it regularly gets clogged
The plumber has cone at least 10 times in the last 8 years just for this bathroom
The plumber said it is best not to use this bathroom for stools.
My husband feels it is bad toilet and that getting a new one that is strong and powerful and has a larger hole would help get the stool through and not get clogged
The plumber says that it is probably not going to get better with a new toilet
Any suggestion on what new toilet recommended
My husband wants a taller toilet as well and elongated
    Thank you

  12. Thanks for a great and useful site. Just what was needed to compare & be an informed consumer prior to a purchase. Like all the comparisons and review info. Thanks again for a great consumer site.

  13. I need to replace a toilet that has a 13 1/2 inch roughin. The top of the toilet is 2 1/4 inches from the wall. I have only found American Standard Cadet and Kohler Highline with that roughin so far. My husband is 6/3″ tall and is in his 70’s so he needs a comfort height. We We have another toilet that he likes, American Standard Champion 4 with an elongated seat, but it is a 12 ” roughin. Our main concern is that the toilet removes waste well. Are you familiar with any other 14″ roughin toilets and what would your recommendation be?

  14. Thank you for all this great information. However, I am confused about the different Toto Ultramax models. In your table at the top, you recommend the ‘MS854114ELG#01 Eco Ultramax ADA Elongated One Piece Toilet with Sanagloss’ as your top overall choice for 2021. However, if you click on ‘Read Review’ there, it takes you to ‘TOTO MS604114CEFG#11 Ultramax II One-piece Toilet with Sanagloss’ as your top choice. Also, your separate Utramax vs. Ultramax II page doesn’t address the (I assume newer) Eco Ultramax, which also has the 1.28 gpf rating. Can you please clarify your current thinking about these different models? Thank you!

    • Ultramax II toilet has a powerful Tornado flushing system, and it is the latest toilet that used advanced technology. Price also affordable. Go for this model.
